Introduction

The Department of Chemistry, Scottish Church College is a vibrant flame on the altar of the one of the oldest temple of learning science in India, nay Asia. She bears the rare honour of imparting scientific culture from the very onset of science-teaching under the University of Calcutta. Aired by benevolent missionary attitude, it is one of the pioneers in enlightment of the women of this country. Since its inception, it maintained very high quality in shaping the minds and characters of its students.

The department has excellent human resources – a dedicated family of staff, teachers of outstanding caliber, experienced technical hands always ready to render their services with a smiling face. Its laboratories are equipped with sophisticated facilities and instruments. No wonder its laboratory was an alter, in which even doctoral researchers leading to the Ph.D. – even post doctoral works were dedicated. It is a dream-come-true and the most opportune moment in a students’ life to have the names enrolled here.

 
The department prides herself in being the Alma Mater of many a luminary who had made glorious contribution towards the society in general and academia in particular. The alumni of the department are the citizens of the world in the true sense of the term. They are winners of acclaimed honours like Third World Academy of Sciences Medal, invited to act as Hon’ble Refree for the Nobel Prize, Member of the IUPAC Bureau the Highest Regulatory Body in the World of Chemistry. In the country, it produced at least two Bhatnagar Prize Winners, Director of National Laboratory, CEO’s in the private and public sectors, Vice-Chancellors of University, Principals, Heads of the Departments, Professors of IIT, qualified technologists and dedicated researchers, entrepreneurs and owners of international patents.

We in this department strive to excel on whatever we have. We boast of our students who replenishes our limitations with their honest endeavour and vigour of youth – which hardly concedes defeat before they are defeated. Throughout their stay they nurture a rare sense of belongingness to the department. They adore a strong bond with the department years after they pass out. It is no wonder they come back in a big way whenever they felt like it in the hours of nee. The department is not only an academic hub but one of a rare kind of nursery which revere and imbibe warm humane relationship, in all its endeavours.
