Crusade against cancer – Dr. Saroj Gupta
Cancer is as old as life.It is a global problem. In India there are about 25 lacs of people suffering from Cancer each year and at least 4 lacs of people die annually. The exact cause of cancer is still unknown. Some carcinogens have been identified. There may some relation with gene in some cases which are called oncogenes.
According to WHO 1/3 of cancer is preventable, 1/3 curable if detected early and treated properly. Another 1/3 only needs palliative (symptomatic) treatment. Children also suffer from cancer, mainly leukaemia and some solid tumours of brain, kidney, bone and eye.
In our country males suffer from head and neck and lung cancer and females suffer from cancer of uterine cervix and breast. Biopsy gives the final diagnosis. As regards treatment, surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are used. In some cases hormonal treatment plays a great role in the management of cancers of breast, prostrate etc.
We need further research and join hands to fight this disease properly.
